babies & learning
life
Today, and actually every day moving forward, I’m going to start with life > work. Because that’s how it should be. This is just one (huge) lesson that I’ve learned during my recent time off.
I spent this year…having a baby. My sweet daughter, Winter, was born on 1/23 during our first and only snowfall of the year. The moment you become a mother it’s as if you were put on a rocket ship and blasted into outer space. You fly through the dark as you watch your old life get further and further away. You’re terrified, you’re surrounded by darkness. Until one day, the ship starts to slow down and you begin to float peacefully. You look out the window and see tiny flickers floating around your orbit. You see that other ships are surrounding you. You’re not alone.
📖 Reading: The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller.
I never used to read fiction. Now, I can’t get enough. I need the escape. I love the way it naturally forces you to use your imagination. I’ve been reading to put myself to sleep but this book is so good that it actually keeps me awake. Oops.
📺 Watching: Beckham
Okay, re-watching. I watched this alone but needed to watch it again with my husband. I came for the nostalgia but stayed for the motivation and inspiration. A true legend. The same goes for Victoria.
👩🍳 Cooking: Mini Muffins
Can we all agree that miniature foods are more fun? I can’t stop making mini muffins. I got a mini muffin tin to make school treats for my daughter, but I eat them way more than she does.
🎶 Listening: Orville Peck
The masked cowboy. He’s a vibe. Feels very “True Detective” - slightly haunting.
work
A huge part of work, that is often overlooked, is learning. I know there is so much to get done, and it may feel like there is no time to take a break from the doing — but you must. I like to start every morning by listening to someone smarter than me. Lately, I’ve been watching LinkedIn courses. But you can also watch TED talks, a Masterclass, or browse YouTube.
We are often so deep in the weeds that we forget about the basics. It’s easy to forget just how simple it can be. I’ve honestly been feeling a lack of motivation the past year (work-wise), and I think that was a direct result of my lack of learning.
Who would have thought that a 12-hour course on Excel would excite me? But it does.
QUOTE THAT HIT
“Fear is like fire. It can either heat your house or burn it down.”
